Synopsis:

Charley Mann left Yorkshire for the Met and a fast-track career – but now she’s back, she’s in charge and the area’s first young, female DI. Her hometown, the Yorkshire countryside, and her old friends all seem unchanged, but appearances can be deceptive. When a brutal murder is discovered, Charley is forced to question everything, and the interest of her ex – reporter Danny Ray doesn’t make it easier.

Review:
If you like gritty crime dramas then Payback is the book for you. This new detective comes from the pens of husband and wife team of Robert & Carol Bridgestock who themselves have over 50 years in the police service and it shows not only in this work but their DI Jack Dylan series.

From the first page you are drawn into this novel and the story. Each character including Charley Mann has something that makes them feel that you know someone like that in your life. The story itself is quite good as you see DCI Mann growing with her team as they attempt to solve a string of strange murders and a cold case assault that brings back some bad memories for Mann. Yet, there seems to be more to these stories as you go deeper into the chapters.

My only fault with the book was I thought the ending felt a bit rushed. However, it will leave the reader looking for part two in the DCI Mann series as I think her first case is far from finished and its secrets that were not revealed in this novel will come more into the play as Mann and her team deal with future crimes in North Yorkshire. Also, I think if there is a few more of the DCI Mann series, it would make a very good TV series something like Vera as the Bridgestock’s descriptions of North Yorkshire in the book are realistic and would make great viewing.
