This is a compelling story of love and human endurance set in Alaska during the 1970s. In her elegant prose, Kristin Hannah tells the story of a family in crisis and of the bonds of community and family. The characters are very well drawn, and Hannah’s descriptions of the landscape and the efforts required to survive made the story come alive for me. Once I began reading the book, I became almost completely absorbed in it right up to the last page. The book deals with many themes, making this book worth several rereads. Fans of Kristin Hannah will no doubt want to read it, as will many others who enjoy contemporary and historical fictions about families.
