Doctor’s death

Dr Francis T.P. Bergin, Beechgrove, Kildare who died at Naas hospital after a long illness, was a native of Kildare and carried on an extensive medical practice in the area for many years. In his early seventies, he qualified in TCD in the late thirties, and began practice in England. On the outbreak of World War II he joined the RAF as a medical officer and on the cessation of hostilities returned to Ireland. He was for a period dispensary doctor at Kilcullen, before coming to Kildare as a dispensary doctor. He retired some years ago and had been ill for some considerable time.

A well known and highly respected figure, he took a keen interest in local affairs and was a very active and enthusiastic member of Cill Dara golf club of which he was a former President and honorary life member. He was also keenly interested in horse racing and was honorary medical practitioner at Curragh race course. On his death the Cill Dara golf course was closed for a period as a mark of respect. There was a large attendance at the interment at St. Conleth’s Cemetery, Kildare. He is survived by his wife, Eva sons Donal and Frances, daughter Mrs. Mary O’Donnell and sisters.
