Mrs. V. Sheppard, Naas

The death of Mrs. Violet Sheppard has taken place following a prolonged period of failing health. Aged 71, she was the wife of Mr. William (Bill) Sheppard, formerly of Rathangan and second daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Pearson, formerly of Balkinstown, Nurney.

Married in 1944, Mr. and Mrs. Sheppard travelled extensively in Africa and the Middle East, Mr. Sheppard being a geologist assistant with various research companies. He was also with the Australian Federal Government forestry research.

During the Second World War, Mrs. Sheppard served with distinction as an R.A.F. dental nurse. After the war she and her husband travelled practically all over Africa, the Middle East and later, Australia, New Guinea, Malaya and Singapore. Then, with her health rapidly declining, they returned to their native country for a holiday, at the end of which they decided to remain and, in consequence, took up residence at Ashgrove, Naas, where Mrs. Sheppard wished it to be known that it ranked as one of the happiest places in which they ever resided – just one large family.

Mr. and Mrs. Sheppard experienced the devastating cyclone, ‘Tracey’, [from] which she did not fully recover, their residence being completely demolished.

The large funeral took place to St. David’s Church, Naas, and after a service, to Maudlins Cemetery, Naas. The Rector, The Ven. J. C. W. Beresford, Archdeacon of Kildare, officiated.
