The Portlester Effigy

Kildare County Archives and Local Studies have two undated photographs of the Portlester Effigy located at New Abbey Cemetery, Kilcullen, which depicts Baron Portlester, Roland FitzEustace (c.1430–1496), and one of his three wives, reputed to be Marguerite d’Artois. The Effigy remained lying in the centre of New Abbey Cemetery until it was relocated in 2001 by Kildare County Council. It was placed in an upright position with a limestone surround and Gothic arch to give the much-damaged effigy some protection from the environment.

A model by Seán Sourke showing the monument in the context of its surrounds can be viewed at: https://skfb.ly/owzKB A monochrome model to aid in the visibility of details can be found on Sketchfab at: https://skfb.ly/6V6pA
